On a casual day-to-day reference, pimples and acne are considered same, although they are, in pure dermatological terms, not exactly theoretically identical. Acne is a skin condition featured by blackheads, whiteheads and inflamed red pimples or "zits.” Pimples appear when the sebaceous glands located at the root of hair follicles turn overactive. One very important answer to the question how to prevent pimples is cleanliness and general hygiene practices. If the general hygiene practices, cleanliness, and self-care steps do not work, one may try over-the-counter acne medications. These lotions are meant for direct and external application to the skin. Usually, the medications contain some standard components like sulfur, benzyl peroxide, salicylic acid and resorcinol. These chemicals are supposed to kill skin bacteria by drying up the oil. If these lotions or creams fail to cure the pimples on you, the dermatologists may proscribe more potent and stronger medications, both for oral intake or external application.
